Level 4 - Criminal Investigation Professional Practices

Conducting a thorough criminal investigation ensures that any enforcement action is justified and proportionate. It also ensures that the right person is held accountable for the crime. Effective criminal investigations help maintain public trust in the criminal justice system.


This programme has been developed to equip enforcement officers and criminal investigators with the essential skills and knowledge required to conduct thorough criminal investigations and undertake enforcement action.


The programme aim is to professionalise criminal investigations and provide an opportunity to understand and develop your skills as a criminal investigator/enforcement officer.

Course Content

This programme consists of six mandatory modules which cover:

  • Criminal investigations and the importance of good record keeping (one-day).
  • Gathering and managing material, evidence and exhibits in criminal investigations (one-day).
  • Obtaining and writing witness statements (one-day).
  • Conducting suspect interviews (two-days).
  • Understanding disclosure (one-day).
  • Considering enforcement action and attending court (one-day).


Attendees then choose one optional module from the following topics:

  • An introduction to open source internet investigations (one-day).
  • Understanding RIPA and the Applicant process (one-day).
  • Fixed penalty notices and patrolling (one-day).

The Programme

This programme has been assured as a Level 4 course by Highfield, which has approved the course content and delivery against a specific criteria. Highfield are one of the UK's top awarding bodies. 


Consilium Training and Support is an Approved Training Centre. We deliver a wide-range of investigation, legal and regulatory courses designed for organisations undertaking investigations and enforcement activities. 


The programme consists of six mandatory modules. Attendees will also be required to choose from one of the optional modules.


The programme is expected to be completed within six months, although this can be extended to eight months in certain circumstances. 


On successful completion of the programme, learners will receive a certificate of completion.


To pass the programme learners will need to complete the following:

  • Attend all mandatory modules of the programme.
  • Attend one of the optional modules of the programme.
  • Successfully complete the assessments for each module which include written assessments, practical assessments, professional discussions and portfolio work.

Course Delivery

At Consilium Training and Support we are dedicated to ensuring that our training is engaging, valuable, interactive, and supportive. For this programme the number of learners will be capped at eight per cohort.


Open Access Delivery

We will be advertising several cohorts which will be available for open access attendance. This is perfect for individuals or smaller groups.


In-House Training

Alternatively we can arrange for this programme to be delivered in-house for your organisation. 


This course delivery can be tailored to your needs. However, learners are expected to have completed the course all all assessments within eight months.

  • Module 3 (Obtaining and writing witness statements) - 11 March 2026
  • Module 4 (Conducting suspect interviews) - 26 & 27 March 2026 
  • Module 5 (Understanding disclosure) - 21 April 2026
  • Module 6 (Considering enforcement action and attending court) - 14 May 2026 


Each module will be delivered between 09:30 - 16:00hrs.


Optional module dates will be discussed and arranged with attendee.
